October 21, 2007

Posted by jacksrfun at 08:50 PM on October 20, 2008

On October 21,2007 around 3:30 AM, a life altering disaster hit us hard at Rancho Del Cielo. It is amazing it has been a year, in many ways it seems still so fresh in my mind, then in some ways it seems like a bad dream. During the year there were times I would wake up in the morning and as I was waking up, with my familiar little warm bodies snuggled around me, I would think it was just a dream, I refused to open my eyes because it was then that it would be pounded in my brain again that it was not just a dream.

Over the course of the year, I have laughed about the obsession about the can opener, or washing the very dirty  dogs in the posh bathtub at the hotel, leaving a black soot ring behind, but at least they were clean,or running around looking for a store that was open to buy something to wear, anything to wear, finally finding a grocery store that was open that sold men's sweats!! Thank goodness for Bev and Gail, for bringing me some clothes, I didn't have to wear the extra large men's sweats out in public!  Or the cell phone video Bev and Dylan took of Jace as she said ?I wuv you? and ordering pizza that none of us really ate.  Then  spending 3 weeks in Lauralyn?s little trailer in the parking lot at the assisted living and every morning, Wyatt and Callie running out to greet Margie as she drove in to work at 6AM and watching Will & Grace, Walker Texas Ranger, CSI, Dog Whisper DVDs over and over again because they were  mindless and I could not handle anything that was not! Under different circumstances, all these would be fun memories to have.  Then there was moving into the trailer on the ranch, no propane, electricity , heat or phone service but we were at home! The dogs and I were settling in. Then it was time to bring Allegro, Allie, Slick and Shine home from the horrible place we had them for the month  to their temporary stalls. It was sad , their reaction to the barn being  gone was heart wrenching yet it felt so right that they were home! The last year was filled with every emotion you can feel, you get a numb feeling after a while and in a way that numb feeling is still with me, while I am stronger  in some ways, I am weaker in others, small stresses become big stresses and little things seem huge. The decision on Jace was a hard one under normal conditions, but due to the high stress, it was  beyond agonizing and incredibly sad and hard for me to deal with, it still is, I am just now getting to the point I can even look at his pictures, the thought of getting rid of his little coat and collar is something I have not been able to bring myself to do yet, even though Wyatt's father, Charlie  will get his coat and Jace's brother Wrath will get his beautiful leather collar .  The rebuilding and moving the horses in and then myself was emotional and my moving into my new place was overwhelming and filled with guilt, but it is finally feeling  like  home. Huck has brought a new happiness and his exuberance and happy personality is a welcome  relief to the sometimes down feelings that  still come up. One of the greatest gifts of all are the 2 foals we are expecting in march. Allie will foal around march 23 and Joy will foal around March 29th. Allie's foal is a blessing as she is in foal to Fames the same stallion Jewel was in foal to! That will be a special foal and we are working on a very special name, starting with Del Cielo, because it will be the first foal born out of a mare that will be our new foundation mare, Allie, the new queen of the ranch. What I have learned in all of this, is life goes on, I am alive, I have my dogs, the horses and my friends, losing beloved friends is beyond heart wrenching  but you have to move on, as long as their loss was not in vain and it was not! We have a real plan if there is a next time, after all, we never thought it would happen to us! We are healing, our wounds have scabs over them, it will be a long time of nursing those wounds before we are healed, if we are ever healed. We have a ways to go before we are completely back to where we were pre October 21, 2007, but we are on our way! I have had incredible support, from my friends, fellow dog lovers, horse lovers and people from all over the country I don't even know. I can't tell you how much it all has meant to me, I could not have made it without all the support. Thank you all and here is to a new beginning and a coming new year, may it be the best year ever!

Thank you all!

A Fun and Busy Sunday!

Posted by jacksrfun at 09:32 PM on October 13, 2008

I decided on Saturday night that I wanted to get up early  Sunday morning and take the dogs down to Sycamore Canyon Preserve to hike AND see the sun come up! SOOOOO We got up early, I got dressed packed my backpack with my trusty camera, water bottle and bowl for the dogs and a bottle of water and a banana for me and we were out the door by 6:30AM! It a glorious morning out there, just awesome! I love that place, I used to board Slick very close to there and so it was fun hiking on our old stomping trails. I have not been there in about 4 years and I wanted to take my favorite trail there, the  5 mile Martha's Grove trail, its rugged but beautiful and so fun.

After we got back and relaxed a bit, my friend Cris and I decided to go up to Julian for the apple festival and have a peice of apple pie and walk Huck and Encore around the town. It was SOOOO crowded! I think all of San Diego was in Julian yesterday. But we had a great time and Huck and Encore got lots of attention.

We went to the CPE agility trial this weekend. Callie was a Star!

Wyatt placed 1st in his Jumpers, which was comical since I didnt even get to walk it and I took him off course once. Huck was a total ham and didn't miss a beat all day, he made lots of friends and got lots of attention, he also got to do some recalls and play tug, he LOVES to tug! I can't wait for next year, he is going to be a blast! next weekend Huck and I are doing the Control Unleashed Seminarsmile Thanks Suzi for these great photos!

CPE Agility Trial Ups & Downs Chula Visita

Posted by jacksrfun at 12:31 PM on April 21, 2008

yesterday I woke up at 2:30AM and could not go back to sleep, my alarm went off at 4:30, so I fed the dogs, got dressed and packed my lunch and headed down to Chula Vista at 5:30AM, of course I stopped on the way at the Circle K for a cup of coffee.

I got there about 6:30, unloaded my truck, put my canopy up and got the dogs settled, waited for my friend Suzi and the Dals, Jiggs and Belle to get there. I pottied the dogs and put them in their crates, at that point I must have put my camera in Jace's crate. Suzi and Jiggs and Belle got there and got settled then we went to the briefing and came back to the dogs and I could not find my camera, (I forgot I had put it in with Jace), I was SOOOO upset and I reported it stolen to the trial announcer, I was at the verge of tears and if Suzi had not been there I probably would have packed up and went home. I had to run Callie in Standards so I got her out, took her collar off and headed to the warmup then to run our standard run. Callie had a flawless  and fast run,  placing 2nd and earning a Q, I came out and was just devestated about my camera, I was seriously down. Suzi and Jiggs were up not long after Callie and I, so I put Callie away and I was so upset I could not take pictures of their run.

After they ran we headed back to our camp, I went to get Jace out and low and behold there was my camera! I completely forgot I put it there. I told Jace you saw me upset why didnt you tell me it was there! LOL

I went and told the trial announcer that it was found, I was SOOO happy! My faith in my fellow dog friends was restoredsmile

Callie's next run was Fullhouse, she had the zoomies and was taking jumps on her own, but that was ok because we got all the points we needed and got our gamble in the end sequence, she placed 2nd and Q'dSmile

Wyatt was up next in Jumpers, he was HYSTERICAL! he was so happy, so happy is an understatement, LOL he ran like his tail was on fire and I was laughing so hard I almost fell down, I took him off course, but we finished and he placed 2nd but didnt Q, it was so cool watching him run with so much enthusiasm, it did my heart good to see him happy. I scratched Jace from Jumpers and Colors, I felt he just was not ready, we have some agility seminars and a Control Unleashed Recall Workshop to go to, hopefully by the end of Summer he will be ready, we did lots of look at it games with the clicker, he really is doing well with that! I was so tempted to let him run, but I didn't want him to fail, I know I made the right decision for him.

Callie had a flawless and fast Jumpers run and won it and Q'dSmile We had a great day, once I realized my camera was not stolen!

Controled Unleashed Seminar

Posted by jacksrfun at 07:36 PM on April 14, 2008

It was really an interesting seminar and I learned some things to help teach Jace to focus on me. There were 3 excersizes that seemed to benefit Jace alot. First I have to say I was a bit skeptical going into this, Jace is VERY high drive and VERY intense, he is very easy to get to go over the top, once he is over stimulated, you might as well just not even try to train him. Everything stimulates him, from rats and other critters to kites and running children. I have never been a clicker trainer type person, Cody's epelipsy would be triggered by it so I didnt use it on any of the dogs.

I have done a small amount of clicker training with Jace, but not alot. But this weekend I realized he REALLY responds to it. Yesterday we learned this excersize called the look game. Basically what it is about is allowing the dog to look at what it wants to look at, not fixate on it, but look at it, as soon as the dog looks at something you click the behavior, when he looks back to me, he gets a treat, he got to the point where he would offer the behavior on his own, it was great! The reason for this, is by allowing the dog to look at what he wants to look at, makes him want to come back to you on his own, it is not forced, which I already know doesnt work on Jace.

We also learned how to increase the stimulas, but then ask for it to be shut off, which is not easy for him, once he is up, coming down doesnt happen and he goes over the top. We also learned how to have him come on his own and stick close by, not by calling him, but by making him on his own, wanting to be my partner. We have some things to work on, but he really responded to these and Im looking forward to applying them.
